BEBOP III. Observations and an independent mass measurement of Kepler-16 (AB) b – the first circumbinary planet detected with radial velocities

چکیده

The radial velocity method is amongst the most robust and established means of detecting exoplanets. Yet, it has so far failed to detect circumbinary planets despite their relatively high occurrence rates. Here, we report velocimetric measurements Kepler-16A, obtained with SOPHIE spectrograph, at Observatoire de Haute-Provence's 193cm telescope, collected during BEBOP survey for planets. Our mark first detection a planet, independently determining mass Kepler-16~(AB)~b be $0.313 \pm 0.039\,{\rm M}_{\rm Jup}$, value in agreement eclipse timing variations. observations demonstrate capability achieve photon-noise precision accuracy on single-lined binaries, our final reaching $\rm 1.5~m\,s^{-1}$ binary planetary signals. analysis paves way more planet detections using velocities which will increase small sample currently known systems statistically relevant numbers, that also provides weaker biases. data contain long-term signal, associate magnetic cycle primary star.

Kepler-16: a transiting circumbinary planet.

We report the detection of a planet whose orbit surrounds a pair of low-mass stars. Data from the Kepler spacecraft reveal transits of the planet across both stars, in addition to the mutual eclipses of the stars, giving precise constraints on the absolute dimensions of all three bodies. The planet is comparable to Saturn in mass and size and is on a nearly circular 229-day orbit around its two...

An Integrated Analysis of Radial Velocities in Planet Searches

We discuss a Bayesian approach to the analysis of radial velocities in planet searches. We use a combination of exact and approximate analytic and numerical techniques to efficiently evaluate χ for multiple values of orbital parameters, and to carry out the marginalization integrals for a single planet including the possibility of a long term trend. The result is a robust algorithm that is rapi...

Kepler planet-detection mission: introduction and first results.

The Kepler mission was designed to determine the frequency of Earth-sized planets in and near the habitable zone of Sun-like stars. The habitable zone is the region where planetary temperatures are suitable for water to exist on a planet's surface. During the first 6 weeks of observations, Kepler monitored 156,000 stars, and five new exoplanets with sizes between 0.37 and 1.6 Jupiter radii and ...

Identifying Exoplanets with Deep Learning: A Five-planet Resonant Chain around Kepler-80 and an Eighth Planet around Kepler-90

NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope was designed to determine the frequency of Earth-sized planets orbiting Sun-like stars, but these planets are on the very edge of the mission’s detection sensitivity. Accurately determining the occurrence rate of these planets will require automatically and accurately assessing the likelihood that individual candidates are indeed planets, even at low signal-to-nois...

Kepler-47: a transiting circumbinary multiplanet system.

We report the detection of Kepler-47, a system consisting of two planets orbiting around an eclipsing pair of stars. The inner and outer planets have radii 3.0 and 4.6 times that of Earth, respectively. The binary star consists of a Sun-like star and a companion roughly one-third its size, orbiting each other every 7.45 days. With an orbital period of 49.5 days, 18 transits of the inner planet ...
